Introducing Virginia
Virginia is a Support Coordinator in our NDIS team. We chatted to Virginia about her background, her role at Accept Care and why she is so passionate about having a career in the disability sector.
I have been working in the Disability Sector for 10 years but have only worked with people living with Mental Health issues for about one year. I have a Certificate IV in Disability and a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. When I'm not working, I love reading, plants, cooking, travelling and socialising.
I work with people living with a disability or mental health issues, to help them access mainstream support, advocating in areas where they are not able to independently. As an example, this may include helping them liaise with the NDIS about their funding. A Support Coordinator is there to help a participant build their capacity to do the things they enjoy independently or with support and to help them meet their goals.
I have a passion for supporting people to meet their goals and build their capacity and independence to do things they enjoy without the barriers that they can often experience. It is rewarding seeing people grow and do things independently that they previously couldn't do, or did but with great difficulty. I also like to pass on my experiences and knowledge to people in the wider community who are not familiar with working in the disability/mental health sector to help break down barriers and stigma.
My most memorable moment to date is finding suitable housing for a participant and supporting them to be safely discharged home from the hospital. I also helped a client gain access to a hobby they once enjoyed and stopped doing – it now brings them so much joy in their life which gives me a great sense of achievement.
